Free Attendance to Forbes Advisor iConference for FPA Members

I had no idea that Forbes puts on a totally web-based event they call the Advisor iConference. Forbes held an iConference in June titled Building Wealth With Innovative Ideas and Advice and the content is now available on-demand (click the link to register).

On December 9th, another iConference is being offered titled Building A Rebound-Ready Game Plan.

How did I find out about this resource? By chance, I was navigating the FPA national website looking for information related to my position as the incoming Technology Director for the FPA DFW chapter. Set over in the FPA News Brief section is a single-line link titled FPA President Part of Forbes.com Regulatory Webinar. I clicked the link and learned of the iConference.

Registration to the iConference is $75, but FPA members can attend the iConference for FREE. Here’s how.

Monitoring the FPA Anaheim 2009 Conference Twitter Backchannel

The FPA Anaheim 2009 conference is underway, and while I am unable to attend this year (something about watching my son while my wife takes the pediatric board exam) I can still glean some good information while monitoring the backchannel on Twitter.

First, most (but not all) tweets from conference attendees contain the hashtag #fpa2009. The hashtag present in the tweet allows Twitter Search to easily find tagged messages and display them all at once.

Since not all attendees are tagging tweets with #fpa2009, I’m providing a list of people that have been posting conference related messages. If I had more time, I’d make an  icon to allow Twitter users to follow these individuals in one click, but I have to change some dirty diapers.

For now, here’s the list (in order of my personal rating of quality/quantity tweets):

See my CRM and Productivity Presentation on March 17

I’m busy working on the final slides for a presentation I’m delivering to the Mid-Oregon chapter of the FPA on Tuesday, March 17.  Lunch is served at 12:30PM, the first speaker begins at 1:00PM, and my session begins after 2:00PM. I’ve been asked to provide an overview of the CRM software market (not a small task!) and also provide easy productivity tips that can help financial advisers get the most out of each workday.

If you’re in the local vicinity, I encourage you to sign up for what I hope will be a very informative presentation.

Click here to visit the FPA of Mid-Oregon meeting page.  Cost is just $55 for FPA members, $65 for all others.

Pre-registration (at least 24 hours in advance) is strongly advised for all chapter meetings. To pre-register contact the Chapter Executive Director, Linda Barba at (541) 284-9855. Please leave your name, membership status, sessions attending, and number of guests.

Two Webinars to Survive the Economic Crisis

I highlight two webinars to be held on March 6 to help advisers survive the economic crisis.  View this vlog entry on YouTube.

My First Vlog: Mid Winter Conference and FPA DFW Career Day

Since I bought a new webcam (the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000), I’m going through the learning process of using it.  I’ve used Gmail video chat, downloaded Skype, and now I’m posting my first vlog here at FPPad.com.

Check it out below and let me know what you think (be kind!)

For my email subscribers, click here to view on YouTube.

Disclaimer: No company productivity was harmed during the making of this film. This is totally a personal endeavor; besides, I was the first one in the office this morning!

Bulk Trading, Tax Training, and Career Planning

Updates will be rather sparse for the rest of the week, both to FPPad and to Twitter.

Bulk Trading

So far for the week, I’ve coordinated a bulk trading effort at our firm to capture losses in taxable accounts where we can execute orders across the entire book of business.  We have multiple custodians, so I’ve had to build some flexibility in the trading techniques to ensure compatibility with the custodians’ preferences.  Still, we’ll be executing almost 20% of last year’s annual trading volume in just a day.  Not bad considering we don’t have the luxury of Tamarac or iRebal.

Follow FPA Boston 2008 Events on FPATelevision

FPA TVThis year I was not able to attend the FPA Annual Conference held in Boston (though I did attend last year’s conference in Seattle, practically in my backyard).  Nevertheless, I’ll be able to keep abreast on developments happening at the conference through FPATelevision.

I blogged about the addition of FPATelevision here, and I’m happy to see the channel continue to receive attention from the FPA operations staff.

Is the FPA Ready for Taleb?

TieI finally managed to read the recent interview of Nassim Nicholas Taleb on Portfolio.com that I blogged about a few weeks ago. I mentioned that Mr. Taleb is scheduled to deliver one of the three keynote sessions during the FPA Boston 2008 annual conference.

Now there are a few things that Mr. Taleb said during his conversation with Lloyd Grove that I think might rub a number of FPA members the wrong way. Here are a few of the things that stood out.

Taleb On Ties

Grove: And this “hating ties” business, and I know you’re being funny, but you distrust people who wear ties?

Taleb: It correlates rather well with incompetence.

Technology Reports Aplenty

techIn the last month or two, I have received a number of new reports that focus on operations and technology in the financial adviser space.  These reports do a fair job of identifying some of the trends of technology used in a wide variety of firms and some of the reasons why advisers have been slow to roll out new technology.

The first report is the 2008 FPA Practitioner Technology Report – Leveraging Technology Solutions.  This report uses results from an online survey taken by 291 random FPA members in February 2008.  Respondents consisted of the following categories:

  • Independent RIAs (35 percent)
  • Independents affiliated with a broker-dealer and IAR-dually registered (21 percent)
  • Independents affiliated with a broker-dealer (20 percent).

The majority of participants (72 percent) reported revenue of $1 million or less.
